What To Do If You Smell Gas
Immediate steps for a suspected gas escape, and when to call an engineer afterwards.
Last updated: 2026-09-01
Take a suspected gas escape seriously and act immediately. Do not wait for a routine engineer booking.
Immediate steps
- Turn off the gas at the meter if you know how and it is safe to reach.
- Open doors and windows to ventilate.
- Do not operate electrical switches, plug or unplug anything, or use naked flames.
- Get everyone out of the property, including pets.
- Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. It is free, operates 24 hours, and can be called from outside the property.
Afterwards
Once the emergency service has made the property safe, an engineer can investigate the appliances and pipework. Contact SureFlow’s gas services team with details of what was found. Never use an appliance the emergency service has condemned or disconnected until it has been properly repaired and checked.
