How Long Does a Boiler Installation Take?
Realistic timescales for a like-for-like swap versus a conversion, what causes delays, and how to prepare.
Last updated: 2026-10-19
A straightforward like-for-like boiler replacement is often completed in a day. Anything involving new pipework, a different boiler type or a flue route change takes longer. Here is what actually drives the timescale.
Typical timescales
| Job type | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Like-for-like combi swap | Often one day |
| Combi swap with controls upgrade | One to two days |
| System boiler replacement | One to two days |
| Heat-only to combi conversion | Two to four days |
| Moving the boiler location | Longer — depends on pipework and flue |
These are guides, not promises. Access, system condition and parts availability all affect the schedule, and you should be given a clear estimate before work starts.
What makes a job take longer
- Changing boiler type. Moving from a heat-only system to a combi means new pipework, removing tanks, and often upgrading the gas supply.
- Flue routing. A new flue position may need a different wall, a longer run, or additional inspection.
- Old or corroded pipework. Existing pipework may not safely take the new system’s pressures.
- System condition. Sludge and debris need cleansing before a new boiler is connected.
- Gas supply capacity. A larger boiler may need an upgraded gas supply pipe.
- Controls. Adding smart controls and zone valves adds wiring and commissioning time.
- Access. Loft conversions, tight cupboards and awkward flue positions slow everything down.
What happens on the day
The engineer protects floors and furnishings, isolates and removes the old appliance, updates pipework and the flue, fits the new boiler, connects controls, fills and tests the system, then walks you through the controls before leaving. Gas Safe notification and warranty registration paperwork follow.
How to prepare
- Clear access to the boiler, the loft and the airing cupboard.
- Move fragile items away from working areas.
- Expect the water to be off for part of the day.
- Keep pets and children clear of the work area.
- Have your old boiler’s manual or service records to hand if you have them.
Getting an accurate estimate
Timescales are confirmed after a survey — anyone quoting a fixed duration for an unseen conversion is guessing. See how we approach boiler installation and request a quote with your postcode and current setup.
