A toilet that keeps running, fills slowly or will not flush can waste water and disrupt daily use. The fault may involve the cistern mechanism, a seal or the water supply, rather than the whole toilet.
Describe the symptom
Say whether water runs continuously into the pan, escapes outside the cistern or appears at floor level. Note whether the flush button or handle moves normally and whether the cistern refills. A photograph of the toilet and visible brand details helps identify the arrangement.
Cistern repairs
Fill and flush mechanisms vary between models. Accessible parts may be replaceable, but concealed cisterns depend on the intended service opening. Do not remove wall finishes before the access arrangement has been checked. Mention if the flush plate is the only visible access point.
Replacing a toilet
Pan outlet position, soil connection, water supply and available space influence compatibility. A close-coupled model and a wall-hung system have different installation requirements. Agree whether the proposed work includes the seat, connections, removal of the old fitting and any making good.
Leaks and blockages are different
A leaking seal or cistern fault is a plumbing repair. Persistent drainage blockages may require a separate drainage specialist. This page does not advertise specialist drain clearing. If water is escaping, avoid further flushing and seek advice about safe isolation of the supply.
