Gas fires have appliance-specific servicing requirements, including considerations that differ from boiler work. Confirm that the engineer is competent for the exact fire and flue arrangement before booking.
Identify the appliance
Provide the make, model and type of fire if known, along with any previous service paperwork. A photograph of the front may help identify the product, but do not remove components or disturb the fuel-effect bed to find a label.
Discuss any change in operation
Mention unusual ignition behaviour, unexpected shutdowns, damage or any change you have noticed. Stop using an appliance that appears unsafe and obtain qualified advice. A routine servicing appointment should not be used to conceal a known fault from the engineer.
Servicing scope
The service needs to follow the manufacturer’s requirements. Access, condition and the associated flue arrangements can affect the work and whether additional investigation is required. Ask what is included and which report or record will be supplied, rather than assuming every fire can be serviced in the same way.
Replacement is a separate decision
A new fire may have different requirements for the opening, ventilation and flue. Ask separately about fire installation or repairs, as these are different tasks from routine servicing. Suspected gas leaks should be reported to 0800 111 999 immediately.
