A domestic gas cooker or hob must be installed or disconnected by an engineer competent for that work. Confirm the relevant Gas Safe categories before booking; boiler competence alone does not establish cooker competence.
Before purchasing an appliance
Check the manufacturer’s installation requirements against the proposed location. Cabinet clearances, ventilation, adjacent surfaces and the existing supply can affect suitability. A product fitting into the visible opening does not establish that the installation is compliant.
Information to provide
Send the make and model, whether the work is a new installation or replacement, and photographs of the location. Explain whether an old appliance needs disconnection and removal. Do not disconnect gas hoses or alter pipework yourself.
Agree the boundaries
A gas connection appointment may not include worktop cutting, cabinetry, electrical alterations or disposal of the old appliance. Confirm each element of the job and who will supply the appliance before arranging dates. Any necessary pipework alterations should be assessed and priced explicitly.
After installation
The engineer should complete the checks and documentation appropriate to the work and explain safe operation using the manufacturer’s instructions. Ask how to access the appliance information and what maintenance is recommended. If you smell gas at any time, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 rather than submitting a normal enquiry.
