The pattern of cold radiators is often more useful than one temperature reading. Start by noting whether every radiator is cold, one room is affected or a radiator only warms in part.
One radiator or the whole system?
If all radiators stay cold, the investigation may begin with heat demand, controls and circulation. If one radiator is affected while others heat normally, its valves and local flow may need attention. Tell the engineer whether the problem started suddenly or has always been present.
Cold at the top or bottom
Uneven heating can be associated with air, flow or deposits, but touching the surface cannot confirm the cause. Do not assume that every cold lower section needs a power flush. Avoid opening vents or valves unless you understand the system and are following suitable manufacturer user guidance.
Balancing is different from cleaning
Balancing adjusts the distribution of flow around the system. Cleaning addresses relevant contamination. Neither corrects every design or component fault. A recommendation should explain what evidence supports the work and which result can reasonably be expected.
Before replacing a radiator
Consider whether it is receiving enough heat and whether its output suits the room at the operating temperatures used. Furniture and covers can also affect heat reaching the room. A replacement should address the identified problem, rather than simply copying the size of a poorly performing unit.
