Why is my boiler losing pressure?

Understand recurring boiler pressure loss, what observations help an engineer and why repeatedly topping up is not a lasting repair.

Pressure loss in a sealed heating system is a symptom that needs explanation. A visible leak is one possible cause, but a pressure display alone cannot identify the faulty component.

Notice the pattern

Record the reading when the system is cool and what happens after it runs, without changing settings solely to test it. Note how frequently pressure falls and whether any recent radiator work preceded it. Compare readings only with the normal range stated in your model’s user instructions.

Look without dismantling

If safe, check accessible radiator valves and visible pipework for moisture. Tell the engineer about staining, dampness or water seen outside at a discharge outlet. Do not remove the boiler case, adjust internal components or block any outlet. A hidden leak may require a separate investigation.

Why repeated topping up is a warning

Adding water may temporarily restore operation in some systems, but it does not resolve the underlying cause. Repeated intervention can obscure the fault and affect system water condition. Follow the manufacturer’s user guidance and seek an assessment if pressure will not remain stable.

What an assessment may consider

The engineer may investigate leaks, pressure-control components and discharge behaviour as appropriate to the system. The correct repair depends on the findings. Include the boiler model, readings and timing in your enquiry rather than ordering a replacement part based on an online symptom match.
